In the past few years, lead paint was used regularly for houses and other building construction purposes. After some time, studies were conducted which showed that the Pb paints are dangerous to the health of children, adults and pets. An individual intake of Pb while breathing leads to poisoning. Therefore there were various laws which were introduced whereby contractors were required to take strict safety precautions in order to do lead cleanup.
One of the two important laws which were introduced was environmental protection agency which was planned to prevent infection caused by Pb based paints. This prevention was done through an easy testing process meant to verify if Pb paint was present or not. The other law was repair and painting rule. Through this law the houses which were constructed before year 1978 were required to strictly follow or take secure measures to remove Pb paint.
There are steps that one should following in order to be able to remove Pb paint from your house effectively. To start with, one need to remove all furniture, fitting, electrical systems, carpets, sofas beds, curtains, just to mention a few from the working area. You can also cover them instead of moving them if at all the removing is a challenge to you.
To avoid spilling of paint on the floor, the floor should also be covered and the corners of the material used should be taped to make sure the cover stays down. The doors should be shut to avoid dust from settling everywhere in the house. The allowance under the do should be stuffed with material to block that space.
Everyone who is not involved in the work like small Children and expectant women should be sent out before the process begins. For safety purposes, you should wear protective gear. Some of the necessary protective clothing you should have is a full cover work suit, hair covering, gloves, safety goggles and shoe covers. Any eatable stuff should be avoided while undertaking this work.
One should also take safety measures to avoid the Pb dirt and fumes produced while working. For instance you can use of chemical strippers. This is because strippers do not produce any Pb dirt or fumes. Using a brush, apply these strippers well and then leave them for sometimes to settle down.
After settling down well, you will see that the paint will have started to soften then it will form little bubbles. When the paint is soft, it is easy to take out the layers by use of a knife or brush. When this is done, you will notice that there are traces of paint still on some areas of the wall. To remove this, an alkaline stripper can be used to take out the remaining layers. A bucket should always be under you during the stripping process so that you can trap as much dust and paint flakes as possible in it.
The final step is to do cleaning of the area been worked on. All the plastic coverings should be removed carefully by grabbing them at the corners and wrapping the sheet up. The chips and dust that fell on the covering should be kept inside when wrapping the sheet. Wash your hands after cleaning, shower then change your clothes. If these steps are followed well lead cleanup will be completely effective and done in a short time.
