You've bootstrapped your startup from a simple idea into something physical and you are now ready to turn the sales tap on full. There's just one last hurdle standing in your way: building a website that delivers your information 24/7.

If you've never created a website before then pay attention as you are about to discover the four key elements that could make or break your online success.

Focus on the end goal or desired action

Firstly, you need to decide what the purpose of your website is going to be. Are you planning on making sales, engaging people via a blog, or all of the above and more.

Websites exist for various reasons because each site has a different end goal in mind. Google has a different end goal to Amazon and Amazon has a different end goal to Facebook. That is because they generate revenue in different ways.

Interlace your brand

Your brand says a lot about your company and what it stands for so you need to allow it to come across to your audience in every aspect of your website design. Don't just stick a logo in the corner of your site and forget about it. That is not a good idea.

Don't fall into the trap of just sticking your logo onto your website and hoping people will connect with your information. You need to actively take steps, with your design, that constantly reminds people about your brand. Visit brands that you love and pay attention to the little things they've done on their sites to give the brand front and center.

By embracing your brand and having it flow through the whole site, you'll leave a lasting impression on your visitors, who may decide that like what you stand for and fall in love with your product.

Responsive Design

The easier you make it for people to consume your content the more likely they are to connect with you and buy your product or service. Usually referred to as removing friction.

Responsive design is a buzz-word for websites that have the ability to resize on demand. If you plan on using a website design firm or freelancer than make sure they design with a responsive framework by default. If they do not your website will be almost impossible to navigate on a mobile device, which is now considered unacceptable.

The money is in the details

Websites are more than what you see at the physical design layer so if you do not understand HTML, the basic language of the web, then hire someone that does.

They will have the experience to guide you on what you should and shouldn't do, depending on the end goal of your site, which will save you an immeasurable amount of money in the long run.
