Trying to add up bits of space here and there that may have only been used temporarily, are called combined-use areas or transitional spaces, and make computing allowable expenses next to impossible to calculate.

When you have decided on what type of home business to start, think of a catchy and descriptive name for your business. Your business name should be something that will catch the attention of potential customers who are looking for that specific type of goods or service. For example, "Betty's Distinctive Chocolates" will attract the attention of people who are chocolate lovers.

Open up a new business checking account for your home business venture. Make sure that every dollar of business revenue and expense runs through this account. To draw in more business put a code on your advertising materials that entitle the clients to a one time discount or free trial service.

Assemble a profile of your typcial customer. How much money do they make? Where do they live and work, and what are their needs? How old are they and do they have children? Identify them, figure out where they shop, then get your products into those locations. If your market is parents, try organizing a fundraiser program with local schools, allowing the school or organization to keep a portion of the sales.

Make sure your home business is following state regulations. You may want to consult with an accountant as you're getting your business off the ground, since many states have specific regulations that aren't always obvious at first. An accountant can help you navigate tax codes affecting your home business, which will help you avoid snags in the future.

Save all your receipts if you are operating a home business. Any money that you expend towards growing and maintain your business, including but not limited to transportation and communication expenses, is tax deductible. File all your receipts. When tax time rolls around you can determine which are eligible. Without all your business receipts, you might be paying Uncle Sam more than you actually owe.

There is only one problem with this idea - it usually doesn't work out the way we planned. Small businesses have hidden problems and expenses, and unless you really know what you're doing and have a pretty good cash stash besides, chances are your business will fail.
