Students whether just starting college, or having been enrolled from quite some time whether at a school like the Australia Institute of Commerce and Technology virtual campus, or others often like to take at least one or two long distance courses. These courses, also known as distance learning allow students to complete work along with other responsibilities and schedules. The Australian Institute of Commerce and Technology virtual campus is just one school offering such opportunities.

Most all colleges and universities, which offer opportunities for distance learning offer credit and no credit, pass or fail classes. There are also organizations which offer free courses with an opportunity for a number of different certificates. EdX is a website which offers a number of classes from different universities around the world.

One such organization offering these certificate oriented classes is edX which offers courses from different universities, each often having different guidelines for receiving a certificate. Other schools and organizations which offer similar opportunities include the Universal Life Church (ULC, ) and the Kaballah Center, two religious organizations which offer classes similar to those found at universities and online. Both organizations offer a variety of classes, with some potential for a degree, most often in the area of divinity.

Taking classes through traditional channels can often be quite stressful. Unless working towards an undergraduate, masters, or PhD, it is often easier to take free classes and opt for a certificate rather than a degree. EdX is one program that provides this and other opportunities through offering a number of different classes from different schools.

While one can obtain a honor code certificate by completing the work and tests in any Audited class, a student must make a small donation to obtain a verified certificate. Basically, the honor code certificate shows the student did the work. A verified certificate can be used at other institutions to prove one has completed the course.

Auditing classes for fun or education can often be quite entertaining. In many online classes, there are a number of lecture and other videos related to the course. As such, a number of individuals find it fun simply to audit a class and watch the videos pertaining to the subject matter.

While there are a number of colleges and universities offering classes, there are only a few which have full online campuses. One being the one in Australia, and others overseas are the few exception to the rule. As most do not charge fees for those taking long distance courses, the sky is often the limit when it comes to choosing courses from virtual campuses like those offered by edX and others.

Traditional universities most often offer an Associates, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. As to whether online courses will qualify for a specific degree plan, the student needs to set up a time to talk with the department head of the subject.

Whether taking classes through traditional channels, or attending through an online organization, it is important to understand which classes provide transferable credits, and those which do not. Only then, can students assure one is taking classes which will work as credit towards a degree.
