What is the difference between sea shipments, land transport and air freight? There are numerous variations. Yet, one thing is obvious. For centuries, it has been the most common and consistent method of shipping across all continents. The shipping industry has progressed due to growth of technology. The major advantage of sea freight is that big vessels can haul equally large volumes of products to almost any destination in the world.

BOL is the document that comes from the broker's carrier to the shipper. It is the formal contract for the cargo transport. At the same time, the Bill of Lading serves as receipt for goods approved for transport. The document needs to be presented at the port of destination to facilitate release of merchandise. This document is made available to you at least four days prior to the vessel's departure.

Sea transport has a distinct benefit. Containers can hold huge quantities of products unlike cargo airplanes with limited capacity. On the other hand, land transportation also has smaller volume and restricted access in terms of transportation routes. Besides, goods conveyed by several trucks can be carried by just one vessel in a single journey. This is cost-savings for the shipper.

The shipping firm prepares schedules. Cargo loading for the particular voyage starts at this point. The cargo ship agent files the berthing application with the port authority of the country concerned. The transport company provides all the necessary information such as type of cargo, tonnage, draught particulars, length of vessel, and actual dates. This data is also forwarded to shippers along with loading schedules and ports of destination. If at all possible, the consignment must arrive at the socking area at least five days prior to docking or loading.

All categories of consignment can be transported and delivered by ocean freighters. These consist of general cargo, bulky and heavy merchandise, volume cargo, refrigerated products, and hazardous components. Just make sure to secure the necessary permits and pay the corresponding custom fees for particular consignments. Freight forwarders can provide you with the estimates of fees and documentation services in advance.

All items must be packed properly to avoid unnecessary damages. Seal the cartons well and read all requirements for packing carefully. Use of pallets means additional fees. Consignments are not insured automatically. There is always a maximum liability for the shipping company. Review conditions for liability coverage and separate transportation insurance policies carefully.
