The job of a supervisor greatly varies depending on the kind of business that they are involved. In general, however, they serve as a link between the intermediate level management and the employees in a firm. They are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that resolutions passed by the managers are implemented on the ground. Their work is comes with numerous challenges. We will look briefly at what makes a good supervisor.

A good supervisor must learn to communicate effectively. Effective communication is that which allows for all involved to interact with each other. As instructions are issued downwards to the employees, so should feedback be received in the reverse direction. This will ensure that employees know exactly what is expected of them and their seniors have an idea of what to except. The environment should be such that criticisms are taken positively by all the parties involved.

You should learn to delegate the duties in the workplace. This exercise will help you realize numerous benefits. One of them is the fact that employees will feel more appreciated and will feel more responsible for the activities in the firm. This may help increase their productivity. On your part, you will be able to focus on only the important aspects of the project. Ensure that the duties are delegated to the most suitable to avoid compromising on efficiency.

Flexibility is key to the success of any business. As a leader in the workplace you need to understand that no single management approach can solve all the problems. Be ready to adopt new tactics depending on the prevailing situation. Even as you strive to always beat the deadlines, remember that the unexpected may happen at times. Be ready to accommodate these events rather than adopting a hard-line position.

You should uphold a high level of integrity at all times. Remember that employees will be looking up to you. You should not compromise under the influence of pressure from friends, influential partners or colleagues or possible negative consequences. Do not make promises that you think you may not keep. Failing to live up to your word over and over is a recipe for disaster as you run the risk of losing the confidence of employees.

A supervisor should be able to inspire the employees. For this to happen you must interact with them and learn their strengths and weaknesses. You need to appreciate that even with the same training, employees will always be at different stages of evolution; some tend to develop faster than others. Strive to identify the talents that exist and nurture them. If you have employees who are under-performing encourage them to work harder.

Pride is one of the major reasons as to why many supervisors fail to achieve expected results. Treat those that work under you with respect and acknowledge their contribution no matter how small. This will help create a good relationship that will be beneficial to individual employees and the entire firm as a whole. It is possible to exude confidence and humility and the same time.

As you start on your role as a supervisor, challenges will be numerous. Initially you may have to put up with lots of expectations from the management and uncooperative employees. Strive to improve yourself on a daily basis by learning from your seniors and juniors. Read leadership books and attend trainings on a regular basis.
