Child psychology is a profession in traditional psychology which specializes in the development and behavior of children. This field makes one of the most studied specialties of psychology in modern times. The focus of the field is children right from birth to adolescence. When in need for a professional child psychologist San Francisco offers a good place to consider making the first visit.

Child psychologists are variably referred to as child therapists. The work of these professionals entails diagnosing and treating emotional, mental, and behavioral problems affecting individuals below the age of seventeen years. San Francisco is home to very many highly trained and experienced professionals in psychology. They work in private practices, clinical settings, school environments, or in hospitals, forming part of medical teams.

Emotional and other problems faced by young teens and children are usually specific to their age group. It is the responsibility of these psychologists to relate with and help their patients with such issues. People within this age group often experiment with alcohol and drugs and they have problems related to their sexuality, self-discipline, schoolwork, time management, anxiety and depression among others. Therapists work in close relationship with these individuals to understand the problems and their depths and formulating solutions and coping skills.

These experts handle a wide range of mental disorders. They are trained in various methods that can be used to cope up with different situations. Before therapists start to give help, they take time to understand what problem they are dealing with. They may interview their patients first to gather facts and understand the problem more. Where necessary, the conduct tests on the patient. Further understating may also be attained through family psychotherapy.

The idea behind this profession is that the child can use their own strengths to deal with external issues affecting their lives. It is believed that many factors influence behavior, including the environment, gender, religion and culture, race, and sexual orientation. As a result of the diversity of these factors, each child has unique psychological problems. Some of the areas covered in this profession include milestones, social skills, mental and emotional well-being, development, and behavior problems.

It is mandatory in most states for one to have doctorate-level training and postdoctoral internship before starting to practice independently. The academic journey begins with an undergraduate degree in psychology. Students cover a wide range of topics including cognitive psychology, research methodology, statistical methodology, consumerism and psychological perspective, and introductory neuroscience. Proven practical experience is also a mandatory requirement.

Licensing is done independently in each state. That is because there is a separate licensing board in all the states. One needs to have over two years of professional experience, postdoctoral practical work, and doctoral degree to be licensed. It is also mandatory to take and pass the licensure examination.

The examination taken during licensing is also unique to every state. Some states have made it a law for practitioners to renew their licenses after a predetermined period of time. It is important to be aware of the laws that apply in the state one practices.
