The chance that someone older than 45 years has some level of hearing loss is one out of five. The rate of deafness increases as one continues to age. Research indicates that about 33 percent of all people aged between 65 and 74 have difficulty with hearing. The percentage rises to 50 at the age of 75 according to statistics given by the NIDOCD.

A lot of research has been ongoing for a long time to find better solutions to the problems of deafness. Deafness may be caused by the normal aging process, diseases, or physiological defects at birth. One of the most outstanding inventions for the correction of deafness is hearing aid, also called deaf aid. These are mechanical devices that correct deafness to varying levels of efficiency. When in need of hearing aids Long Island is the best place to check out.

Adults who become deaf do so because of damaged inner ears. The damage occurs to hair cells responsible for the conversion of sound vibrations into impulse that are taken to the brain for processing by nerve cells. Deafness can also result from excessive exposure to loud noises besides disease and aging. A family history also increases the chances of one becoming deaf. Similarly, research shows that males have a higher predisposition of being deaf than females.

Deafness occurring in the inner ear tends to be permanent and cannot be reversed easily while that which occurs in the middle and outer ear is mostly reversible. Causes for middle and outer ear deafness are usually easy to reverse. Such causes include fluid buildup, impacted earwax, and certain medications. Infections are the main causes for fluid buildup.

Deafness in all the three parts of the ear is more prevalent among senior citizens, while younger people suffer mostly from middle and outer ear deafness. Consulting an otolaryngologist is the advisable step to take in case one suspects that they are experiencing any form of loss in ability to hear. Seeing a board-certified otolaryngologist is better. The otolaryngologist works to correct any reversible causes of deafness if they can. If they cannot, they will advise one to see an audiologist.

Once hair cells in the ear have died, they cannot be brought back to life. However, patients can use hearing aids and similar devices to improve their hearing and live a normal life. Digital deaf aids are available in five main types. In all these types, sound is received through a microphone and transmitted into a chip. Once in the chip, the sound is processed, amplified, and then delivered to the ear.

These devices have features that help to correct various problems in the sounds received and to make them more lifelike. People have different sound perceptions, which makes the suitability of deaf aids to vary from one person to another. Different versions of various brands also differ and offer different experiences to users.

Even though a deaf aid moderates volume and amplifies frequencies, it is hard to correct hearing loss to normal hearing. There is always that jarring noise in the background. However, some devices are able to filter wind and other background noises.
