Carbon dioxide gas has several applications in commercial and industrial applications. As such, there needs to be a mechanisms for safe storage and use to avoid the potential hazards the gas can cause. To solve this problem, carbon-dioxide gas is stored in cylinders as a compressed liquefied gas and increasing its temperature results in an increase in pressure.

Sometimes the pressure can be too high to cause tanks to rupture. A rupturing cylinder can cause substantial injury and damage to property, and to avoid that, safety mechanisms are incorporated into the product. Bursting disks are fitted into the tanks so that when internal pressure exceeds 190 bar, they rupture. This releases all the gas without an explosion. One will buy the gas when it is at a very low temperature, usually at -57 to -78 degrees Fahrenheit. At these temperatures, the pressure generated on the walls of a cylinder is only 100 PSI. However, raising the temperature to room temperature causes an increase in pressure to 850 PSI. Increasing the temperature further to 110 degrees increases the pressure to 2000 PSI.

Such levels of pressure are what causes the cylinder to rupture. As a precautionary measure, these tanks are usually filled to 34 percent of their capacity only. Filling them any more would place too much pressure on tanks even at lower temperatures. Thus, users are advised to ensure that their tanks are stored in a cool place where the temperatures are constant.

Tanks are sold with user instructions that one needs to read and understand before starting to use the product. One of the most important instructions is connecting a regulator or reducing valve to the cylinder before use. This is done to avoid explosion when the cylinder valve is opened. An upright position must be maintained at all times the cylinder is being used. Children should not have access to the product at any time.

Most models of regulators come with one or two gauges. In most cases, the regulator with one gauge is fine. This gauge is for showing the pressure at which the gas is being delivered from the cylinder. The second gauge is for letting the user know how much gas is left inside the container. This allows one to make adequate preparations in advance so that they are never caught unawares.

Tanks should be bought depending on how much room one has for storage. One can get a grasp of how much room they need by visiting a local brewery to see what happens there. The mistake most people make is to buy tanks that are either too small or too big for the storage space they have. The storage should also be cool with low level ventilation.

Closed, unventilated vehicles should never be used for the transportation of tanks and one should avoid handling them using wet hands. When there are several tanks in a place, one must label each one of them very well before storing them. Finally, to make sure everything is okay, regular inspections should be done.
