Drones are devices for aerial photography or cinematography when there is a camera attached to it in taking interesting or unique angles for scenes. These are remotely controlled by human operators staying on ground or controlled by computers autonomously with previously programmed commands. Professionals use them commercially to provide newer ways of capturing objects, people or moments.

You could get bigger drones and cameras with better dynamic range, resolution and lens but they have drawbacks and complications when operating. Improving your shots is important in aerial cinematography Canada despite of the gears you have right now. Here are several useful tips to improve your shots and produce quality videos for your clients.

Scout the location in advance before the clients arrive either on that same day or days earlier to check the area and do some tests. This will let you check for any magnetic interference, avoid unflattering scenery and see how the land is laid. Flying drones in new locations helps you become familiar with your surroundings and avoid any obstacles.

Pick and settle on a subject to know what is the best way in framing and executing shots with the focus on the tree, building, person or street. This might change while shooting or none was decided before but as long as intentions you had were remembered and not just shooting randomly. Consider how that particular sequence start when picking the subject and how it also ends.

Do some rehearsals and take shots even if conditions are not that good to lift off pressure and improve in capturing the next ones. You see something not easily noticeable at your location and a better way of approaching it can be developed. And you will have extra videos if you cannot get the right ones you have been aiming for.

Drone cinematography usually happens outdoors meaning it depends on weather conditions like precipitation, wind, cloudscape and light. These things we cannot control so make yourself ready by preparing your camera with their right settings, formatted cards, charged batteries and set focus. You can control these things and when circumstances are better, you could immediately take the shot.

Shoot smoothly the sequence because sudden movements would remind the audience that they are watching video which ruins their perspective. Usually, best ones are not complicated and too much being done is unneeded in proving yourself. Clean and simple view is enough to serve the story and separate operators for the drone and camera helps in achieving this.

Decide on how high you need the drone to fly in getting the shot you want though the higher they go, the harder they are to operate. Creating a sense of motion in great heights requires moving them faster and farther. Keeping them up for a few stories or just above lamp posts or tree line is enough in getting an eye view like a bird does.

Use foreground element to put between you and your subject will make the scene more dramatic. This may be a car, wall, fence or tree moving in and out the shot to give a sense of motion for viewers. Without them, wide shots might seem like the drone is not moving when watching it.
