It is important that concrete porosity is reduced in order to avoid its damage over time. These are measures that can be undertaken in many different ways. There are products that exist in place to make such building material composed of cement, gravel and other essential components waterproof. It is vital to use water in the making and treatment of cement but once that process is complete, an addition of water to the mixture is harmful and may cause adverse effects. Concrete waterproofing admixture are therefore used in these cases.

The building component can deteriorate over time when proper waterproofing is not done hence allowing the passage of water that deposits impurities and chemical substances that cause its destruction. Advanced mixtures have been produced for use in waterproofing structural building materials and with continued enhancements to the products over the years. Since various mixtures that can be chosen from existing, one can opt for one that suits their needs.

A substance is fully waterproof if the movement of water through it is limited and there is an increase in the ability to withstand hydrostatic pressure. There are different methods to waterproof the building substance but some are more effective than others. In the past this procedure was done from the outside or the inside of the material by the use of materials known as sheet membranes which would mostly be inefficient and costly to repair. Nowadays construction mainly uses mixtures that make the structural building material water resistant.

These constitutive mixture systems are usually added on the mixture of cement and the other building substances required. A chemical reaction takes place within the mixture to make it more repellent to water. Unlike using sheet membranes, it reduces labor costs and speeds up the timeline of the construction project.

The use of these water repelling mixtures can function in different ways. Pore-blocking mixtures may reduce the size of the capillarity pores in the mixture or block the pores completely thus reducing capillary absorption. Hydrophobic mixtures are soluble mixtures that react to form an insoluble element that lines the capillary pores preventing water absorption.

Crystalline technology is another new method. The crystalline mixtures can be introduced into construction materials by mixing or applying it on the material surface. The chemicals contained in the mixture usually restructure the construction material and causes non-permeability against water. It may also be utilized on older surfaces in order to achieve water impermeability.

The percentage of mixtures used should be dependent on the total weight of the structural construction material and not just cement itself. The water to cement ratio should be done in a manner that reduces the water logging of the building component.

Even though it is costly to buy these products used to make construction components waterproof and is a good method of lessening water seepage as well as overall damages to buildings. As a result, it is one good investment that aids in preventing future losses.
