Legal assistant re also referred to as paralegals. The term paralegal refers to people who perform significant legal work under the authority of the law in a place. In the absence of the legal assistant, the work they do would have to be performed by an attorney. That means that paralegals are important professionals in the legal profession. Paralegals do a wide range of tasks. Their job responsibilities may vary depending on the employer. One of the most important responsibilities these professionals have is to conduct legal research and offer presentation. These assistants have to conduct research related to cases that an attorney is working on and present it. They must find all relevant information that pertains to a case to help prepare attorneys for closings, hearings, trials, and meetings.

They must also find appropriate legal articles, laws, and applicable judicial decisions to the case besides researching information which relates to a particular case. They also engage in analysis of information gathered on the case and then producing a report. The report produced is given to the lawyer who goes through it and then decides how the case should proceed. These professionals also engage in making presentations to clients.

Conducting interviews on clients and other parties is also part of the job description. Paralegals are not permitted to conduct initial interviews with clients because that is the job of the lawyer. However, to gain an understanding of the case, paralegals have to be present during thee interviews to take notes and interact with clients. With that, they are capable of doing successive interviews with clients and witnesses from the knowledge they gained from initial interviews.

The most challenging task they have is that of drafting legal documents. This means that one must be good at written communication. They draft documents like complaints, pretrial orders, legal briefs, subpoenas, deposition notices, and interrogatories among many others. They must also see to it that drafted documents are timely delivered to the recipients.

There is also a wide range of office administration tasks that paralegals handle. These tasks include answering phone calls, maintaining reference lists, filing papers, calling clients, witnesses, court personnel, and other lawyers. They also prepare the daily schedule of the attorney they work with.
