There are a number of components in a process system which work together to attain a certain goal. Commonly, a typical production process system is made up of pumps, vessels, stainless steel tanks and valves. Stainless steel piping is used to connect the components. There are chemical changes that take place during production in the product stream. This results from the product going through the different components.

The changes in temperature have their negative effects which include thermal damage or viscosity, possible solidification and partial crystallization. To curb these effects, use of jackets on the valves and piping can be of great importance. Jacketing means that other tubes are fitted over the piping in order to allow cooling liquids to go through the outer tubing. This same process is followed to make jacketed valves.

As the fluid passes through the outer tube, it transfers heat from or to the product stream. Thus, the fluid acts to take away or to introduce heat to the product stream so as to keep temperatures stable. The confectionery industry is one of the industries in which jacketing is used heavily. Other industries include breakfast cereal, dairy, and generally the food industries.

Stainless materials are of much preference for jacketing. Despite stainless steel being of much preference, other materials can be used too. For example, processes that involve usage of raised temperatures require the use of materials that are resistant to corrosion. The most commonly used materials for such applications are specialty alloys. Elevated temperatures are common in the production of certain salty mixtures, sauces and syrups.

Special treatment needs to be done on valves used in the production line of a factory since they play a very important role. For example, high temperatures can damage valves. For this reason, jackets are used to offer protection to the valve. Valves need protection since their failure can result to the whole production line failing. This will cost a company a lot of money and time because they will need to repair the valves for production to go on.

It is also important to protect a valve because it is very expensive to acquire in the first place. The cost of protecting he valve is much lower compared to the cost of buying a new one or repairing a spoilt one. As such, companies usually opt to have the device protected in advance rather than waiting for it to fail so that it can be repaired or replaced.

Different configurations of jackets are available on the market. There are some jackets that are place around the valve to protect it. These kinds of jackets can be removed readily if there is need. Bolt-on jacketing is a good example of removable jacketing. It is usually made of a two-piece aluminum casting.

Jacketing such as the Bolton jacketing can be made into different sizes in order to fit various sizes of valve. Its shape may also be custom-made so that it fits on valves of different models. Heat is transferred to any direction of the valve courtesy of a thin layer of heat transfer mastic. There are also outlets and inlets used for transferring heating medium which may include glycol, vapor, water, steam and hot oil.
