Like most other homeowners, you expect your heating and AC system to work reliably throughout its life. All it requires for upkeep is a regularly-scheduled tune-up, right? Wrong! Without discounting the role of maintenance, nothing can keep the strain of constant use from catching up with the equipment. Worse, it's not uncommon for brand-new devices to break down all over sudden. As such, it helps to know in advance the signs that you need emergency heating and cooling repair Prince Georges County:

Frequent on-and-off Cycles: How long it takes your equipment to get both of its job done will depend on several factors. Even so, most models are designed to run about 2 to 3 cycles per hour. But what if yours tends to engage frequently for short intervals? This is known as short-cycling, a common pointer towards an improperly-sized unit or one that has something amiss with it. Whatever the case, short-cycling will stress your equipment to such an extent that its lifespan will be shortened.

Strange Noises: Modern HVACs are designed to be as quiet as possible -- besides a soft hum, yours should make very little noise. Any kind of deviation from this norm (e. G. Rattling, buzzing or hissing) means that there's a critical malfunction somewhere. This could lead to a total system breakdown when you least expect it.

Temperature Inconsistencies: Ever noticed that certain sections of your house tend to be warmer or cooler than other areas? Although such variations can be caused by exposure to sunlight and open windows, a properly-functioning HVAC unit should be able to address them. Failure to do so means there's a high chance that a major component has broken down.

Puddles: It's normal for heating and AC systems to produce moisture when in operation. And as you've likely noticed, your equipment is designed to dispose of this water without requiring your involvement. The presence of puddles around the equipment (or drips of water running down from the same) would therefore be hinting towards a malfunction. Other than that, it's worth noting that moisture problems always lead to mold growth.

Surging Energy Bills: It's perhaps the worst of homeowners' nightmares -- experiencing a sudden spike in your utility bills. Or an upward trend over the course of several months. Although either of these can be caused by other elements, a failing AC unit may very well be the culprit if all else has stayed constant. Why? Because it needs more energy to run when in this kind of state.

Unusual Smells: This is perhaps the most critical sign of HVAC system malfunction. Why? Because running the unit for any longer risks creating more problems besides a total breakdown. Rather than waste time trying to pin down the cause, you're better off switching the equipment off instead.

It's hard to swallow the thought that your heating and AC system could break down at any moment, but that's the harsh reality. Common sense therefore dictates keeping an eye out for suspicious signs as part of maintenance. As always, it would help to have the equipment inspected and repaired immediately before the situation gets worse.
