The programming language that is used in these systems is referred to as G-code. G-code is written to control the various behaviors of corresponding machines. Some of the behaviors that are controlled by g-code include coordination, feed rate, positioning, and speed. The ability to be programmed allows for to repetitive, predictable cycles of tasks being performed with a very high level of accuracy and little human involvement.

The earliest numerical control machines were invented in the early 1940s. The invention came when the movement of pre-existing tools was controlled using motors. Advancements in technology led to the replacement of mechanisms with analog computers. Later, digital computers replaced their analog counterparts and CNC machining became a widespread concept.
