Measles is a highly infectious viral disease with devastating complications. A vaccine has already been developed for the disease but millions of people still get infected. Health experts have provided tips on how to treat measles and also manage the extreme health conditions associated with this condition.

Identification of symptoms is important in the process of treatment. A patient will manifest fever that is accompanied by at least a cough, running nose or conjictivitis. These signs will be seen at least 9 days after the virus has gotten into the body.

Measles leaves its victims with inflamed eyelids, watery eyes and a running nose. The eyes also become too sensitive to ordinary light. It is common for an infected person to sneeze a lot. A victim also gets a red-brown rush. A patient will be down with body aches. Most of these patients will also experience fever that rises and falls depending on severity of the rash.

A lot of patients will miss the signs or be misdiagnosed. This has delayed treatment for most of them and exposed them to devastating complications. This can be blamed on the fact that a rash may arise out of numerous health issues. A patient suspected of being infected with measles should be rushed to hospital immediately. Symptoms that fail to improve or temperature that rises above 38 degrees are reasons to see a doctor.

Complications arising from the condition are common and sometime devastating. They include vomiting and diarrhea, infections on the respiratory track and breathing difficulties. The eyes will also be infected because of the swelling. You may witness febrile seizures and ear problems that may escalate into loss of hearing.

Low immunity has been blamed for a lot of the complications that many patients experience. One of the most devastating complications is the development of full-blown pneumonia. Some of the medication may cause liver failure. There are incidences of brain inflammation and eye squinting because the nerves and muscles are damaged.

There is no treatment for measles yet but doctors recommend management. You will be required to rest and also take plenty of water to replenish what has been lost through dehydration. Keep the child or patient cold if his or her temperature goes too high up. Take the patient away from people or places with smoke to avoid coughing.

Protect the eyes using sunglasses and also keep your patient in a dark room. Crustiness around the eyes should be cleaned using a warm and damp cloth. Antibiotic medication given for ordinary coughs will not solve the problem. The best solution is to use a humidifier or a bowl of water in the room. Children over a year old can be fed on warm water with lemon and honey.

This viral disease is known for causing dehydration. You should therefore provide the patient with a lot of water. A patient who is still at the infectious stage should be kept away from other people. Vitamin A supplements will reduce the chances of complications. Ensure that everyone around is immunized.
