Filipinos who live and work abroad try their best to keep their ties with their family and friends in the Philippines. Aside from frequent phone calls and chats, they also send balikbayan box padala to let their loved ones experience the things that they have abroad. Filipinos take advantage of this because of the lower shipping fees to their home country. Here are some things to know about this.

This program is offered by courier and shipping companies to Filipinos who work abroad and who would like to ship several items to their family members in the Philippines. A person can be billed depending on the size of the box or on its weight. This is a special program for non-business customers who ship items only for personal consumption since certain tariffs may be waived.

There are a number of things that can be placed inside these packages. Some of the popular items they send are clothes, toiletries and grocery items. Filipinos do this because they want their families back home to experience some of the lifestyle that they have in the foreign country. They do not splurge a lot to buy these. Usually, these are purchased during sale days and as part of bulk purchases.

To make sure that the packages reach their destination at the right time and condition, select the shipping company carefully. While the shipping costs are a big factor in choosing a company, its reputation should also be considered. It should be licensed to ship items from the country of origin and its destination. Ask friends for recommendations if you are unsure on whom to trust.

Because shipping companies try to keep their costs low, they only ship on specific days or every month. On the rest of the days, they collect the boxes and keep them in their storage while waiting for the shipping date. Although keeping boxes in storage is understandable, there are certain items that require an optimal temperature to keep their integrity. These include food and toiletries.

If you are sending items that are intended as gifts, especially during holiday season, inquire with the shipping company about the expected arrival of the shipments in your home country. Ports and couriers are busy during holidays so try sending your items at least a month early to ensure that they arrive in time. Otherwise, your family will definitely still appreciate your post holiday gifts.

Use appropriate packing techniques to keep the items safe inside the packages. The heaviest and largest items should ideally be at the bottom. Smaller items can be used for filling the spaces in between. Make sure that there is little to no gaps to make the package sturdy. You may even use bubble wraps or newspapers to protect fragile items. Seal the boxes completely with packaging tape.

Filipinos abroad always see to it that they can take care of their family in the Philippines even though they are not with them. By sending them these simple gifts, they can show that they care and they can even share their blessings even to distant relatives. They only need to deal with the right shipping company that can take care of their packages.
