As you tried to stroll around your city and see those nice architectural structural structures being built, you could somehow say that the world had really advanced. With new different technologies being introduced to humanities, life had become easier and the economy had really progressed. In the field of engineering, different techniques are applied to construct something. And they may use rock and dirt directional drilling.

Technology of drilling had begun long ago. Around 2000 BC, it was the Chinese who first started to use this to drill wells. They used cable tool procedure to generate salt water. As the demand of oil began to rise in the mid 19th century, the application of this technology had advanced especially now the world had entered the modern era. Many oil industries are now rising. As a result, this practice is needed.

One of the techniques that are now being used by engineers to drill wells is Horizontal Directional Drilling or HDD. This method is now modern and does not use those old traditional methods and tools. This became very helpful in installing pipes for gas, oil, electricity and water industries. This technique has an advantages and also disadvantages.

The good thing about using HDD on construction is it does not disrupt the land or the surface while it burrows holes so builders can install some pipes and cables. In that case, the work is much cleaner and faster, causing the builders to save some time and also the result is much quicker. Because of that, it became an ideal technique for installing gas, water and sewers.

When constructing roads, builders should ask some permits for road opening. Because of that, it would cause some heavy traffics and troublesome for the residents. With this method, engineers would not need some permits anymore because the project can still work underneath the road without causing traffic.

When the condition of weather is pretty bad, projects are usually halted and be resumed after many days. That would make the construction longer. HDD has advantage on this because it still can work when the weather condition is bad. If you do not like disruptions, this can be your perfect choice.

However, using HDD has also its weaknesses. The price of this is quite expensive and it required special tools and skilled crews to utilize the method. Another problem is Barite sag. That would cause some bad logging tools and some complexities on cementing and perhaps on sticking the pipes. Moreover, the function will have some limitations when the surface or land has some cobbles and rocks.

The technique is really useful especially for economic growth. However, it gives some disadvantage to the environment. This human activity can affect the wildlife because of its noise pollution. The oil spills can cause dangerous health effects to animals and even humans. The toxic chemicals released by explosion of pipelines and wells could cause pollution to air and water.

HDD has its many advantages. Oil and gas industries really gain benefits from this. However, humans still need to be aware of its effects to environment.
